Dementia may cause various impairments in functioning which may affect the person's ability to do their job or it may have not affect initially. Review all aspects of the situation with the patient and ensure that they allow time to absorb the diagnosis before rushing into a decision.

Encourage the person with dementia to seek a medical and neuropsychological assessment to confirm the progression of the dementia and its impact on work capacity.

If the person with dementia is considering leaving the workforce after diagnosis, the workforce departure is health related, and an employee is entitled, on the production of a medical certificate, to utilise unused sick leave.
