VicRoads reporting and assessment process

Once you become aware that a patient has a serious, permanent or long term illness, disability, medical condition or injury that may impair safe driving ability, advise the patient of his or her reporting obligations [1] and assist them by completing a VicRoads Medical Report.

Based on the Medical Report, VicRoads may request further reviews with a specialist (e.g. geriatrician, neurologist, ophthalmology) and determine whether a medical review driving assessment or, in the case of dementia, an occupational therapy driving assessment is required. VicRoads will request this in writing from the patient if it is required. A list of Occupational therapy driver assessors and an information sheet is available on their website. There is a fee involved depending on the individual OT, the duration of the assessment and number of sessions required.

If further medical reports or assessments are required VicRoads will usually allow four to eight weeks for the patient to arrange these.

VicRoads considers all relevant reports and is responsible for the licensing decision, including conditions to be attached to the licence, if any. The patient can request a review or appeal this [2].
